Your success in digital self-publishing depends on the perceived value of your book and the strength of your marketing plan. It's no good having a brilliant piece of work and expecting Amazon and the like to promote it for you. Remember, these e-book platforms are carrying over a million books and new titles are added every day. If you leave your book on there with no input to get it known it will get lost in the crowd. You need to do some work and spend some cash promotion. Again, the internet makes this so much easier and cheaper for the author on a budget.

Create A Customer Ascension Model

With your first book you should use it as a teaser to building your author rating and popularity. Clever players here would price their books very low or even make it free for a limited time. The idea is to encourage interest and recommendation and let readers know there is more to come. It also significantly helps you move up through the download charts. Make your book good value for money. Share links to where your book is sold in emails to family and friends, or wherever you can place it. An ascension model is a way to adjust prices upward in line with your author rating. There are instances where an author's first book was retailed as an introductory £ 1.50, and the second book £ 8.99. The higher-priced second book sold three times more in volume.

Get Reviews

A recommendation from your readers can be a great catalyst for future sales - especially when they are linked to social networks. Reviews with Facebook pictures and Twitter links are seen as more authentic as they are not likely to be fake reviews. Sales on Amazon add credit to your sales potential. The higher the number, the greater your chances. It's especially helpful if you can get a known name to enjoy and review your book. There are online outfits that act as agents to source reader reviews by offering a free read on your behalf.

The readers access your book on all mobile platforms as well as desktops. They are the ones you usually come across on free Android and iPhone apps as standard on your smartphone. The publishing portals have the readers, you have the book. Reviews and comments are gold dust; gather as much of them as possible. They can also be a bit of a headache if the reviews are negative or questionable. You are still better off than not having any at all as feedback good or bad shows engagement. Some books have done quite well on Barnes & Noble due to the high number of reviews wrapped in controversial opinions. It stokes the fires of engagement as comments grow into the debate and prompt curiosity.

Free offers

We mentioned the importance of reviews earlier. This is the fast way to harvest them. As explained with the Reader's Coupon below, with the free offer promotion it's all about whetting the appetite. The important thing here is to make sure the perceived value of your book is intact. Freebies are sometimes seen as substandard items, so it's best to be watchful how you present your offers. Carry your free offer with something the reader can give back. Things such as reviews, email capture, or 'tell a friend' in return for the free offer or a share / like to go with your free download offer, promoted with weblinks, are good ways to do this. Free offers from print or e-books are great with non-fiction titles. You can link the free offer to a related book that is priced for profit. It's all set up in the landing page of your website. There you have the freedom to deliver effective marketing messages to those that choose to redeem your offer.

The Reader's Coupon

This is quite a unique idea that has been tried with magazines and produced significant results whilst promoting readership and subscription. It's the vehicle to also carry your free or discounted offer. It works best with books of leisure and reading enjoyment only. It is designed to work on downloadable e-books and magazines, especially taking cost into consideration.

The idea here is simple - your aim is to offer half your book or at least the part 1 side of your book as a free sample. How much of your book / s you wish to promote as a teaser is your own strategic choice. Similar to the Blockbuster-styled coupons, get a great image of your cover with a brief synopsis of your book and add coupon codes or QR codes to it. You can always add an end-of-offer date to prompt a speedier response. Your potential readers can collect your coupons from hand distributors or you can have them as inserts in print publications that target the same readership profile. The beauty of the idea is the 'no strings' perception. You should get a decent conversion of 5-7% eventually full-paying readers, which is 3 readers out of 40. The printed coupons are neat and small, printing similar to credit card sizes (costs about £ 50 for 3000). Of course, your distribution costs should be factored in. Your readers redeem the access codes on your website or QR scan their way to your landing page. You allow access to the download only if they sign up to your fan club with their email address. This is what you would need to get potential paying readers for the next book or part 2. It's one of the best promotional ideas as it's relatively cheap, quick, and accessible.

Know Thy Readers

Your book is not designed to entertain you, the author. It's there for others to purchase and enjoy the content. It's one of the first things to do before the book even has a name. Identify your target reader, find out the size of the market, and plan how to reach them within your budget and time frame you've set for yourself. What type of person would find your book useful or interesting? What kind of websites do they usually spend time on? What other publication relates to your book? All these questions under consideration will help you develop your marketing plan and give you an idea of the true cost of getting your book profitable or strategically placed for the second book in waiting.

Connect With Bloggers

Blogs are great for your e-publishing campaign. There are a number of reasons why. Firstly, those that subscribe to blogs are also the same reader profiles as e-book lovers. They enjoy engaging text content and warm to familiar styles. The other reason is that the blogging community is incredibly open. There are thousands of popular bloggers in the UK alone. They become popular by latching on to particular subjects and becoming experts in their chosen areas of interest. There's even a popular blogger on 'How to be a snob' - the visitor hits will surprise you. Get talking to these bloggers, you can even offer to be a guest blogger where you can contribute content and indirectly or directly plug your book. Some bloggers do it for the love of writing and would be happy to accept your banner ad or links to your book sales page for little or no money. Make sure you connect with blogs that are closely related to the genre of your book or at least one that has a connection to your primary subject matter. Guest blogging is where you could be able to plug your book if your contributed writing is strong. You can be cheeky and poach the following fan group from someone else's blog, as long as the blogger gets some decent content contribution from your good self.

Social network your book

Twitter, Facebook, and the rest of the social networks can be a great way to gain fans and maintain a decent following. Starting with friends and family, you upload various parts of your book, gather feedback, opinion, and conversation around your publication and make offers to get the sales in. Social networks accelerate your quest for building a fan base and connecting with potential readers. It's a positive domino effect if they like your book. Blurb BookShow allows you to get your book shared, reviewed, and showcased on Facebook. The tools allow for blog integration so that comments and likes are seen by others beyond Facebook. Encourage readers to share likes or endorsements with friends. You have great social network websites like Pinterest.com, where you can find someone who has pinned the cover of your book on there. Join as many online networks as is related and always make offers. Find niche networks for self-publishers and consider joint internet marketing campaigns where the costs are shared. AdWords on Google, pay-per-click, and banner adverts are all options to support your sales drive.

Do Not Put All Your Eggs In One Basket

You don't have to place your book on the e-bookshop and hope for the best. Get yourself a micro-website with some details about the book and author and place the link to the bookshop within it. Market and promote your website for buying traffic from there.

Do not over or underprice

Remember the competition. Know when to mark down your price to engage a wider readership sale, especially if it's your first with more to come. Know when to make your book available at the price it's worth it. Keeping your book too cheaply priced for too long can make your list of books look a bit low-rent.

So there you have it. Get your imagination going, plan your project well and earn some dotcom money with your first book. You never know, you may be able to give up your day job.
